The Ultimate Creator

Do we have a “Creator Complex” or are we stewarding our creative calling to create for change from our Ultimate Creator? In the story of the world, there is one central Hero, and it’s not you. Even in the story of your own life, there is one central Hero, and it’s still not you. And yet, in the lavish generosity indicative of His nature, God invites us to walk in His power. He calls us to create for change.

He walked across the palace rooftop, taking in the sights and sounds of the kingdom—his kingdom—while the city seemed to hum and throb with activity beneath him. This was the highest point in the city, and rightfully so. He was above, they were below. He hoped people could see what he knew: he had built this with his very own mighty hand, and surely it was a testament to his high power and glory. “I made this,” he said softly, running dainty manicured fingers across his silken royal garb. He sighed with satisfaction. “All by myself.”

With the words still on his lips, he heard a voice coming from even above him…

Stewarding Our Creative Calling

In Daniel 4, King Nebuchadnezzar learns the hard way that having a “creator complex” and creating to build up his own name, rather than create as a steward of the creative giftings imbued by his creator, can have a day of reckoning. There is only one true King, one true ultimate Creator, and one true Hero, and it’s not Nebuchadnezzar, and it’s certainly not us.

It took King Nebuchadnezzar losing his sanity, growing claws like a bird, and living in the wild as a beast before he could recognize that there is only one Most High and “those who walk in pride he is able to humble” [1] but we must all live and breathe and create and serve with full knowledge that all we have we first received from our Creator, the true Hero and the Ultimate Creator. We may not strut across a palace rooftop, preening in a golden robe, but do we do it with our jobs, our families, and our ministry?

I built this career from scratch and I bootstrapped this business all on my own.

I gave my children life and I built this family.

I saw the need and I met the need with my ministry.

The list can go on…

Do we have a “Creator Complex” or are we stewarding our creative calling to create for change from our Ultimate Creator?

One Central Hero

In the story of the world, there is one central Hero, and it’s not you. Even in the story of your own life, there is one central Hero, and it’s still not you. God alone, as imaged by Jesus Christ, the God-man, the beginning and the end, the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of everything, deserves that central role.

And yet, in the lavish generosity indicative of His nature, God invites us to walk in His power, and live in His victory, as the hands and feet of our King, imaging our Hero to the world.

He calls us to create for change.

To follow Him, and represent Him, and copy Him.

When we walk and live and create in dependance upon Him and for Him we can embark on a heroic creator’s journey, following in the footsteps of our One True Hero and Ultimate Creator.

Thusly situated with our focus on our one True Hero and our fully derivative little-h hero status, we can feel confident The Creator’s Journey is the heroic mythic journey our hearts have always yearned for since we were young, and that our Creator has implanted within us.
