The Creator’s Journey

There are many obstacles along the path in the Creator’s Journey. The Attack on Creative Calling we often experience starting at a young age. But, as we all know in the very truest part of ourselves, the Creative Calling never goes away. Even amidst the fear and doubt, we sense it’s pull. The Creator’s Journey is not an invention, but an observation. From the ancient Greeks to Joseph Campbell and Christopher Vogler, there is something about the story of us, about story itself, driven by The Story of redemption, that governs creativity and creative conflict and our creative calling. We have a burning inside to create. And this is a good thing. A God-thing. Given to us by the One True Hero, The Ultimate Creator.

But, as with any good story, we run into problems along the way. This is that story: The Creator’s Journey.

There are many obstacles along the path in the Creator’s Journey. The Attack on Creative Calling we often experience starting at a young age when we were creators once, and free, to Creative Fears and Creative Blocks that often perpetuate over time as a result of this early Childhood Creative Scar.

But, as we all know in the very truest part of ourselves, the Creative Calling never goes away. Even amidst the fear and doubt, we sense it’s pull. All throughout life we will have opportunities to embrace our creative calling or Refuse the Creative Call.

Theoretically, embracing our creative calling is the easiest thing in the world to do because it is literally what we were made to do. But overcoming our Creative Fear takes courage and heart. Over time, as we age, and allow our dreams to dissolve, it becomes harder and harder to cross over.

But it’s never too late.

No matter your age, no matter how thick and calloused your Childhood Creative Scar has become, you always have a choice to Refuse the Creative Call (give in to Creative Fear) or Cross the Creative Threshold (overcome Creative Fear).

The Path to Creative Clarity

So, by now, whether you’ve studied the Enneagram before or are just learning about the Enneagram and personality typing in general, hopefully one of the 9 Creative Enneagram Types resonates with you. So how does your Creative Type fit in with The Creator’s Journey? Not everyone will experience every stage in the journey, and in this exact order, but the path often looks something like this:

Creative Type (given by Creator God) →

Creative Desire (manifests naturally at young age) →

Childhood Creative Calling (from enjoyment to “I was made to do this”) →

Attack on Creative Calling (“you’ll never be good enough, why you?”) →

Childhood Creative Scar (seed of Creative Fear) →

Childhood Creative Fear (seed of Creative Block) →

EITHER Refusal of the Creative Call (give in to Creative Fear) and stay stuck at Childhood Creative Block OR Crossing the Creative Threshold (overcoming Creative Fear) →

Creative Mentors/Allies/Enemies (we are better together, but some mean us harm) →

Creative Trial and Tests (the grain of sand that produces the pearl of all creative beauty) →

Creative Resistance (fully bloomed Adult Creative Block, never stops) →

Creative Crucible (the hardest part is when you are so close to breakthrough) →

Creative Resurrection and Rebirth (you have created a new thing into the world!)

The Creator’s Journey Never Ends

And then the journey continues, as we experience successes and failures, much uniquely driven by our particular Creative Type, but each time cycling through various stages of The Creator’s Journey, often inexplicably driven by our Childhood Creative Scars and Childhood Creative Fears, but always realizing that no matter how we may push it aside, our Creative Calling never goes away.

Each of our Creative Callings is unique, and yet the same. All throughout this book we can learn from others answering (and sometimes refusing) the Creative Call, overcoming their Creative Fear to Cross the Creative Threshold and affect real and lasting culture change.

But the Creator’s Journey never stops.
